Community Thanksgiving Dinner
|
What began as an idea brought about by a 16 year-old student came to reality on Thanksgiving Day. A member of our ICP Youth Ministry team had an idea in August to provide a free meal on Thanksgiving day to members of our community. Despite several obstacles, most notable the boiler replacement project at the Church, this first annual tradition was a success. Over 26 meals were delivered and more than 75 meals were served at St. Mary's Academy with several more picked up for take-out.
This truly became a community event with not only parishioners but also community members stepping up to lend their support. There was over 80% participation from the students in the program. All left over food was taken to St. Peters's residence, a shelter in Troy.
Thank you to:
- Gary & Barb Lancour for opening up their home so that our Confirmation students could bake loaves of bread for the parishioners,
- the North Hoosick Fire Department for the use of their kitchen so that the meal could be prepared,
- St. Mary's Academy for the use of the facility to serve dinner,
- the students of St. Mary's Academy who so beautifully made festive placements and centerpieces for the tables,
- Harrison Vending Systems, Inc. for the take out containers that kept the food warm and portable,
- MentorWorks for their sandwich boards and signs that were placed around town that were used to help advertise the dinner, and for putting together gift bags for the guests,
- Perry's Orchard who donated apples
- and the parishioners who so generously donated desserts, monetary contributions and time to prepare for the dinner
- Lastly, a huge thank you to the Youth Ministry program students who realized the gift of sacrifice by giving of their time to set up, cook, serve and clean up for the dinner on Thanksgiving Day.
